Why the medieval era was so dark? Because it was full of knights!
Earlier this term, our Year 7 and 8 students were presented with a very entertaining and educational view of life in the Medieval, Viking and Ancient historical periods. As part of their Stage 4 site study for History, our students learnt about the weapons, armour and tactics of these historical civilisations.
Presented by James Adams Historical Enterprises, the two hour session covered many aspects of the middle ages beginning with an explanation of Viking and Saxon tactics and why knights overcame them, rendering such armies obsolete.
Learning how weapons and armour evolved and were used was a particular highlight. Students enjoyed the opportunity to be hands-on as they were put into both mail and plate armour to get a real feel for their respective advantages and disadvantages.
Law and order, as well as torture methods were discussed, and it was inevitable that a few students would end up in a pillory - a wooden framework with holes for the head and hands, in which offenders were formerly imprisoned and exposed to public abuse.
Longbows and crossbows were compared as well as polearms and pikes, which were also mentioned and students learned how these, along with guns, ended the era of knights!

~ 💛 WALK THE TALK 💛~ This term, our Year 10 Walk the Talk Crew students and Year 12 students joined forces to run a hugely successful bake sale at school, raising funds to create thoughtful pamper hampers for the women and families residing at The Sanctuary, our local Hills District women’s shelter. Our Year 10 and 12 collaboration baked and sold a range of goods including cupcakes, cookies and brownies. With a shared spirit of compassion and community, the students carefully curated and donated these hampers to bring a touch of comfort and joy to those at The Sanctuary, showing just how powerful kindness and collaboration can be. ~LEARNING AT MARIAN~ Our Hospitality students have been showcasing their skills in customer service and food preparation through the operation of our VET café, Mary’s Café. 🍽 Students take pride in taking orders, preparing and presenting meals, and providing quality table service to staff during recess and lunch. Over the past few weeks, staff have been treated to themed menus including an elegant High Tea, traditional Greek cuisine, and a selection of indulgent café-style sweets. ❄️✨ What a magical night we had at WinterGlow! ✨❄️ It was truly a night to remember for the Marian community, with twinkling fairy lights setting the scene for a wonderful celebration of our Creative and Performing Arts students. From fantastic dance and music performances to the fabulous visual art displays, the talent on show was incredible! We also supported a worthy cause, raising funds for the Vinnies Winter Appeal through our Cupcake Stall and Hot Chocolate Café—thank you to everyone who contributed so generously. 🌟Marian Year 7 Debaters Shine in CSDA Semi-Finals 🌟 On Friday, 20th June, the Marian Year 7 debating team proudly competed in the Semi-Finals of the CSDA Debating Competition. Reaching this stage was no small feat—teams were required to be undefeated in all six debates and secure a win in their Quarter-Final. Our Year 7 team rose to the challenge and achieved exactly that! Throughout the season, the team has brought enthusiasm, determination, and flair to every debate. Their commitment to teamwork was evident as they consistently delivered well-structured arguments, built strong cases, and responded thoughtfully to opposition points. While their impressive 2025 winning streak came to an end in the Semi-Final, the debate was fiercely contested, with adjudicators facing a tough decision due to the high calibre of both teams. We are incredibly proud of the Marian Year 7 team and their outstanding efforts. Congratulations to Annie B, Ruby B, Lauren C, Aurelia G, Hannah M, Hayley T, and Kiana V. We congratulate all our debating teams across the season. Thank You, Marian Community 💚❤️💛💜 A heartfelt thank you to our entire Marian community for your incredible generosity and support during our recent Vinnies Winter Appeal. Thanks to your kindness, we were able to donate much-needed grocery items, blankets, beanies, and winter essentials to help support people experiencing homelessness this winter. 💙🧣🧤 Together, we also raised over $2000 through our fundraising events — including the WinterGlow Cupcake and Hot Chocolate sales, our popular $5 Op Shop, and chocolate sales. On Friday 13th of June, we celebrated our annual feast day, Marian Day. The day began with our Marian Day mass which was a beautiful celebration of what it means to "Be Marian". Fr Giovani reflected on the Gospel from John 14:15–16, 23–26. This gospel reminds us that we are never alone - the Holy Spirit is with us, guiding us and strengthening us to live lives of love, faith and courage. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. I shall ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever. If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make our home with him. Those who do not love me do not keep my words. And my word is not my own: it is the word of the one who sent me. I have said these things to you while still with you; but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you.” We were encouraged to reflect on Mary’s unwavering courage. She said yes to God, even when the path was uncertain. Her strength in standing up for her faith, trusting completely in God’s word, is a powerful example for us today. May we, like Mary, be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and find the courage to live out our faith with confidence, compassion, and love. 🙏🤍 #MarianDay
